Our Approach
We believe that openness, curiosity and vulnerability reflect strength, and we seek to learn from a broad range of people, organizations and opportunities.
Relationships matter, and we strive for open communication and authentic collaboration with grantees so that we can work as partners who trust and respect each other. We admire people with passion and entrepreneurial spirit and believe that a single individual can make a significant difference.
The Lampert Byrd Fund adapts its strategy to best meet the needs of our partners in four distinct programs:
Unorthodox Philanthropy (UP)
UP seeks to identify great people and ideas that have the potential to achieve outsized impact and do good in the world. We have uncovered efforts to support through a series of sequential search processes that have leveraged a diverse network of scouts - creative thinkers, connectors, and agitators in their fields.
Environmental Stewardship Fund (ESF)
By supporting meaningful outdoor experiences for youth and young adults, we help to inspire and prepare the next generation of diverse, passionate environmental leaders in the Bay Area and beyond - with a focus on fostering leadership skills and experience for young women and girls.
Youth Opportunity Scholarships (YOS)
Research shows that youth with “identity projects” – hobbies and passions that inspire determination and grit – have significantly higher rates of high school graduation and are more likely to be in school or have jobs after high school. By giving young people a chance to pursue a passion beyond the classroom, YOS inspires hard work and helps kids find meaning in the world.
Women & Girls Leadership Fund (WGLF)
WGLF supports organizations and initiatives that help women and girls to find and use their voice as leaders and role models nationally, regionally, and globally. Nationally, WGLF helps forward the cultural conversation on women's issues and supports organizations that help women and girls prepare for and get elected to public office. Globally, WGLF helps girls access and complete school and cope with the disproportional negative impacts they suffer due to environmental degradation.
